Why Buy a Hybrid?

You’ve been driving conventional autos with internal combustion engines (ICE) for years and like their long range and the fact that you can fill them up anywhere. But you’re not thrilled with the unpredictable high gas prices, and all the damage that such cars wreak on the environment. So you want to get into a pollution-free and responsive electric vehicle (EV) but don’t like the relatively short range and the difficulty of finding a charging station when you’re out and about.

Hybrid Advantages

Hybrids combine the range and easy fill-up of conventional cars with the emission and handling advantages of an EV.

  • At low speeds, they use a battery pack and electric motor. Your emissions can go down by up to a third, according to Consumer Reports.
  • At higher speeds and longer distances, they give you the performance and range of a gas engine.
  • Your fuel efficiency increases. Most hybrid SUVs achieve over 35 MPG, and hybrid sedans get over 45 MPG.
  • You don’t have to plug in a hybrid like you do an EV because gas-station fill-ups provide the power. Regenerative braking converts the energy usually lost when you slow down into electricity for the battery, which boosts your range.
  • Hybrids can offer tax savings, lower maintenance costs, and special parking privileges. When it’s time to sell, your hybrid can fetch a higher price because they hold their value longer.

What about Plug-In Hybrids?
Like regular EVs, plug-ins (PHEVs) plug into an outlet to recharge the battery, enabling it to run on pure electric power for up to 50 miles before having the gas engine kick in. They’re ideal if you take many short trips because they run purely on electricity and won’t use up any gasoline until you go on a longer commute. You end up saving more money than with a regular hybrid.
